Joe’s Jukebox 2004

(open yer ear)

New music for your ears and your fears. Sounds, both unfamiliar and comfortable. Startling new ideas and simple over-used formulas. Throw away your radio and free yerself...

90 Day Men +++ Chicago-based 90 Day Men have a new record called PANDA PARK. NOisy and frantic compositions held tightly together by intricate beats, and more vocal than past releases, I can’t express how good the song “Missouri Kids Cuss” is, which is available in MP3 format at Southern.com.

Detroit Cobras +++ Rachel Nagy and friends belt out obscure 60’s garage, blues and soul on three release, but it’s their live show that you should be looking forward to. Detroit-Cobras.com has live vids and downloadable music. Their cover of Otis Redding’s “Shout Bama Lama” is easily my fave.

Wanda Jackson +++ Yes, I am referring to The Wanda Jackson, the queen of rockabilly, one of Elvis’ mentors and early touring partner, who last had a hit in 1959. Due to her wonderful latest album “Heart Trouble” and much recent press, her back catalogue is steadily being re-released and is readily available. She’ll be at Fitzgeralds soon, live and kickin’.

Mondo Generator +++ Party rock anthems from members of Queens of the Stone Age, Kyuss, Screaming Trees, Fu Manchu, etc, etc. they call it “stoner rock” but I place it in the same bin as CKY and TurboNegro. Fun for all.

Fantomas +++ Add the original drummer from Slayer, the guitarist/vocalist from Melvins, and the vocalist from FaithNoMore/Tomahawk and what do you get??? Spacy, deafening, terrifying noise in the form of movie soundtack covers, soft audio companions to your nightmares, and some of the most original material ever recorded. Delerium Cordia is the title of the new, one-track record from Ipecac Records.

The Dirtbombs +++ Hailing from the current “rock mecca”, Detroit, the Dirtbombs play loud, straight up rock’n’roll. I am a big fan of their album of soul covers (Ultraglide in Black) and have enjoyed what I’ve heard from their new cd, “Dangerous Magical Noise, which really shows off what a band can do with two drummer and two bass guitars!

The Come Ons +++ Once just another female vocalled Detroit garage band, The Come Ons have matured nicely into a sound all their own. Each member has a ton of side projects going, so if you dig them like I do, records will be piling up quickly... Thecomeons.com has plenty of info and some mp3s.

Dan Melchior & the Broke Review +++ After studying, touring and recording with the likes of Billy Childish and Holly GoLightly, Dan formed the Broke Review to reflect every aspect of American music, drawing heavily from the garage and alt/country scene, but making a sound all their own. The new “O Clouds Unfold” is a much more complex album, mp3s are available all over the place.

A Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra-La-La Band With Choir +++ A venturous side project from instrumental art rock’s Godspeed You Black Emperor! has grown from 3 members to six, added a 12 member choir and made one of the most amazing records that I have ever heard. “This Is Our Punk Rock, Thee Rusted Satellites Gather + Sing” is above and beyond anything released last year. Eddie Spaghetti "The Sauce" Alt/Country from the lead singer of The Supersuckers. Fun songs about getting drunk, high, and losing women.

Stereolab "Margarine Eclipse" & "Instant O In The Universe" New cd out this week, already available at iTunes with some bonus tracks, and the "Instant O" E.P. from last year. More awesome post-pop with all the oddities you expect from Sadier and company.

KEEP YER EARS OPEN, PLAY IT OVER AND OVER AGAIN AND YOU WILL REGRET IT> SAVOR IT> YOUR EARS WILL THANK YOU LATER.
